iPod Social Codes Still Evolving

Just as the cell phone has altered the dynamics of social interaction, the iPod's ubiquity has led to an evolution of what's acceptable and what isn't. Vikki Ortiz, writing for The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, quoted college professor Alex Halavais as saying: "Nobody sets the rules for these things."
In fact, Mr. Halavais has now come to expect students to leave one earbud in when they drop by his office for help. "It's something that we negotiate over time," he told Ms. Ortiz. "It takes some time to evolve those social codes." Leaving one earbud in while talking to others has become a contentious point, with some tolerating it and others feeling that it's still rude, Ms. Ortiz explained.
