iPod nano Will ‘Rock Your World,’ Says Columnist
Thursday, September 15th, 2005 at 3:00 PM - by Brad Cook
David Sheets, writing for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, says that while "initial sales [of the iPod nano] were underwhelming," the new device's major allure is really its technology, not its appearance. He observes: "And that could spell the end for the digital storage workhorse: the hard disk."
Mr. Sheets purchased a nano and put it through its paces, mostly gushing over its capabilities, although he does note that the MP3 player's small screen makes viewing photos almost pointless. "Whos going to see them without a magnifying glass?" he asks. "Nevertheless, its a nice thought on Apples part."
By using flash technology, however, the iPod nano sets itself apart from hard drive-based MP3 players that are prone to skipping music and disk crashes. Mr. Sheets writes: "Flashs potential seems limitless; all it needs now is promotion. If iPod nano succeeds behind the force of Apples massive marketing machine, then the ubiquitous, spinning, crash-prone hard disk drive is well on its way to a museum shelf."
