iSuppli: iPhone Users Talk Less, Surf More

iPhone users don’t spend as much time actually talking on their phone, by percentage, compared to other phones, according to a report from iSuppli.

The U.S. research company found that American owners spend their time enjoying all the capabilities of the iPhone, not just talking, compared to other phones. For example, for all other types of mobile phones, users spend about 72 percent of their time chatting. For the iPhone the percentage time is about 47 percent. The report was cited by Pocket-Lint on Wednesday.

Conversely, iPhone users spend about 12 percent of their time on the Internet compared to 2.4 percent for other phones. The number is about the same for listening to music and e-mail: 12 percent for the iPhone, 2.5 percent for the others.

"This usage pattern shows Apple has succeeded in producing a true convergence product that consumers like to use for multiple purposes", said Greg Sheppard, chief development officer for iSuppli.

The report isn’t surprising considering the capabilities of the iPhone compared to many other phones. However, it should be noted that the report compared the iPhone to all other phones, not just smartphones. If that distinction were made and the iPhone were compared to, say, just the BlackBerry, the numbers might have been very different.

In addition, on Tuesday, Rubicon Consulting reported that one third of iPhone users carry a second phone, often for e-mail. It also suggests that there may be some complex dynamics going on -- for example, looking up numbers on the iPhone but making the call on another phone for coverage or expense management reasons. What seems to be clear is that as the iPhone starts to percolate into the daily habits of those on the go, usage patterns for wireless users with multiple devices will be complicated to track for some time to come.
