iTunes 7.4 Adds Ringtones, Closed Captioning [Updated]

Apple released iTunes 7.4 Thursday morning with compatibility with the third generation iPod nano, iPod classic, and iPod touch. The update to the media jukebox application added support for custom ringtones as well as the ability to display closed captioning where available.

Once Apple enables the ringtone feature at the iTunes Store, iPhone users will be able to customize purchased tracks to use as ringtones. Ringtones will cost an additional US$0.99 on top of the $0.99 per track price. Customers get to keep the original track and custom ringtone.

The update also included a security update to prevent a maliciously crafted music file from crashing iTunes or allowing arbitrary code execution.

iTunes 7.4 also added the ability to rate albums with one to five stars, and watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window.

iTunes 7.4 is free, and requires for Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher or Windows XP and Vista. It is available for download at the Apple Web site, or current users can obtain it through Apple’s Software Update application.
