iTunes Climbs the Media Player Charts

Based on current growth patterns, Apple's iTunes media player application is set to overtake RealPlayer by mid-2006 as the number two streaming media player of choice. During its climb, iTunes bypassed QuickTime's popularity in mid-2005, according to Macworld UK.

Based on information from Web Site Optimization, iTunes is closing in on 30 million unique users in the United States alone. The report also notes that iTunes users tune in to specific Internet streams more than twice as long as WindowsMedia Player and RealPlayer users do.

Microsoft's WindowsMedia Player (WMP) is holding the top spot with around 80 million users, due in part to the market dominance of the Windows operating system. WMP usage is shrinking, however, based on the amount of time users spend with the application. The number has been steadily declining for the past three years.

In January 2004, WMP users spent on average 46 minutes 49 seconds streaming Internet content. In January 2006, that number had dropped to 45 minutes 48 seconds. In contrast, iTunes was at 1 hour 22 minutes in January 2004, and jumped up to almost 1 hour 51 minutes by January 2006.

iTunes has been gaining popularity in part to the explosive growth in podcasting. With the application's tight integration with the iTunes Music Store, it's an easier tool for most listeners to use when finding and downloading podcast programming.
