iTunes Responsible for TV Ratings Boost

NBC is crediting the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) for the sudden boost in ratings for its popular show The Office. Last week, the show saw its highest ratings ever in the 18 to 49 year old demographic, according to TV Week. NBC also says that The Office is its top performing program at the iTMS.
Since NBC signed its deal with Apple in December, The Office has accounted for a third of the broadcaster's downloads, far outweighing its other programming.
Although some analysts are cautioning not to credit the iTMS with recent rating bumps, other networks have seen increases, too. ABC's Lost and Desperate Housewives have both seen increases in ratings, compared to the same time last year.
Frederick Huntsberry, president of NBCU Television Distribution, commented "Consumers have choices, and we are not reaching all consumers with one technology. We are offering content and reaching viewers for the first time. These are audiences using iTunes to manage their music."
NBC hopes the iTunes halo effect will have positive repercussions for The Office, pushing it into a better position for syndication.
