iTunes Store Available in China Again, Sort Of
Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apples iTunes Store is accessible inside China once again following a mysterious block that prevented users inside the country from using the U.S. version of the Web-based media store during the Olympics. While the store is available again the album at the center of original block, Songs for Tibet, is still unaccessible -- and its the only album that China-based shoppers cant buy, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Users in China had been able to access the U.S.-based iTunes Store until word surfaced that athletes competing in the Olympics were downloading and listening to the pro-Tibet album. Proceeds from album sales have been donated to "peace-related projects that are dear to the Dalai Lama."
Chinas government never confirmed that it was involved in blocking access to the iTunes Store, but it is possible considering its negative stance on pro-Tibet activities. Government involvement seems even more likely now that the iTunes Store is accessible again following the Olympic closing ceremonies, especially since Songs for Tibet is the only album that users cant seem to buy inside China.
