iTunes Store: Over 5 Billion Served

Apple’s iTunes Store seems to be able to sell songs the same way McDonald’s sells hamburgers: by the billion. The Cupertino company’s McMusic service has served up over five billion songs as of June 19, and is renting and selling over 50,000 movies per day, too.
Tight integration with Apple’s iPod and iPhone product line up, along with its easy to use interface, no doubt helped drive the popularity of the iTunes Store.
According to Apple, the iTunes Store is the top music retailer in the United States, and hosts a catalog with over eight million songs. The store also offers some 20,000 TV shows and 2,000 movies.
Apple also helped drive the growing trend to offer copy protection-free songs with main stream music services when it struck a deal with EMI last April to distribute higher audio quality without DRM restrictions. While other record labels have begun toying with DRM-free songs, however, they have been avoiding the iTunes Store and are offering the tracks through competing services.
Despite the limited number of DRM-free songs at the iTunes Store, Apple still seems to be able to clean up in the market and is leaving the competition in the dust.
