iPhone 3GS, 3G Top Consumer Reports Survey
Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 at 8:48 AM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple's iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G landed in the top two spots in the most recent Consumer Reports smartphone study. The iPhone 3GS took the top spot, and the iPhone 3G took second place thanks to their superior screens, multimedia support, navigation, Web browsing and battery life.
Apple's iPhone performed well compared to the competition in every category except for voice quality. Competing smartphones, however, didn't fare significantly better in voice quality.
The Samsung Omnia tied for second place with the iPhone 3G. The Blackberry Storm and Bold, along with Google's G1 and the Samsung Epix tied for third place, and the Palm Pre tied for fourth place with the Blackberry Curve.
Despite its fourth place ranking, the Palm Pre still rated higher than the iPhone in multitasking and messaging.
The overall point spread between the iPhone 3GS in first place and the Palm Pre in fourth place wasn't very big. The iPhone 3GS scored 73, and the Pre came in with 67.
The tight ranking along with the number of smartphones that tied for the top positions helps show how close the competition is among the top manufacturers -- which ultimately is good news for consumers since the companies will have to continue to innovate or risk dropping out of the ranks.
