iPod Scammer Pleads Guilty

The iPod repair guy that tricked Apple into sending him some 9,000 iPod shuffles, Nicholas Woodhams, fessed up in court and pleaded guilty to money laundering charges, according to Ars Technica. Mr. Woodhams was accused of manipulating Apple's return policy for defective shuffles to obtain iPods without paying for them, then reselling the units through his Web site.
Mr. Woodhams allegedly used trial and error when entering shuffle serial numbers into Apple's system to get replacements for what the company thought were defective iPods. He then sold the illegally obtained shuffles for US$49 each without returning any defective units to Apple.
Mr. Woodham's hasn't been sentenced yet, but he has already agreed to surrender property he obtained with the proceeds from his scam, including cars, a house and over $57,000 in cash.
Once he finishes settling up with the criminal legal system, Mr. Woodhams may still have to deal with Apple's legal team. The Cupertino-based company filed its own suit against him for the iPod scam and for using the iPod trademark without permission. Apple is awaiting criminal sentencing before deciding whether or not to pursue its civil case against Mr. Woodhams.
