Microsoft Zune Sales Fall 54% in December Quarter
Monday, January 26th, 2009 at 3:14 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Sales of Microsoft's Zune MP3 player dropped during the December quarter, according to an SEC filing. Microsoft's 10-Q form reported that, "Zune platform revenue decreased $100 million or 54% reflecting a decrease in device sales."
In contrast, Apple saw a much lower 16% drop in revenues from iPod sales during the quarter, while posting a 3% year over year gain in unit sales. Total iPod revenue for Apple during the quarter was $3.37 billion, a wee bit higher than the roughly $100 million Microsoft brought in from the Zune.
Microsoft did not break out Zune unit sales in its 10-Q filing.
Analyst Shaw Wu of Kaufman Brothers told Dow Jones that the iPod, "gained considerable market share against the Zune," during the quarter, a market where Apple has long been the dominant player.
