O2 Could Lose Exclusive iPhone Deal in October
Friday, August 7th, 2009 at 11:10 AM - by Jeff Gamet
Following word that Apple may start offering the iPhone through T-Mobile in the U.K., ending O2's exclusive deal, it looks like that could come true as early as October. Reports surfacing now suggest that O2 could get iPhone competition come October 9, according to Mobile Entertainment.
Apparently O2 signed a deal with Apple in 2007 that runs through 2012, but the exclusive part of that arrangement expires after only two years. If so, adding the iPhone to other U.K. networks in October would fit that schedule.
Word that O2 might be facing the possibility of losing its iPhone exclusivity in the U.K surfaced in July. At the time, the rumors pointed to T-Mobile and Orange negotiations with Apple.
The rumored negotiations were limited, however, to the iPhone 3G, and not the new iPhone 3GS, which would let O2 keep at least a little of its exclusivity.
If iPhone deals with other carriers do launch on October 9, U.K. customers will have a choice among services when they go iPhone shopping for the first time since the combination iPod and smartphone was launched in their country.
