Report: USAA to Allow Check Deposits Through iPhone

Let George Jetson know his time is at hand: USAA (United Services Automobile Association) will begin allowing customers to deposit checks as early as this week through their iPhone by simply photographing both sides of the document, according to The New York Times. Customers won't even have to mail in the check, and will be advised to mark it void or to discard it.

"We're essentially taking an image of the check, and once you hit the send button, that image is going into our deposit-taking system as any other check would," USAA executive vice president Wayne Peacock told the Gray Lady.

The service will be limited to those customers who are eligible for credit and have insurance through USAA, which is both a bank and an insurance company. The firm services mostly U.S. service men and women and their families, and has some 7.2 million customers. According to the Times, one million of them already do some of their banking through iPhones or other mobile devices.

Upon reading this little story, I find that “Future Shock” has definitely gotten my attention.

Switching to paperless airline tickets on a cell phone took a major mental shift, and I haven’t used that technology yet, but ehhhh, I’ll be OK with it.

Depositing a check, on the other hand: mmmm, this will take some significant neural readjustment.

This seems very easy to forge to me.  Don’t checks have microprint and watermarks that can’t easily be captured by a camera, especially not a 2MP one?  The only thing I can think of is that forgeries would eventually be detected by someone depositing a duplicate check number.

Otherwise this isn’t any different than the e-check option for online payments or the way I’ve seen some Old Navy stores process a check immediately and give the paper check right back to you with a VOID stamp.  All check processing is digital anyway, I just thought we had a bit more verification of the check’s security features.

I believe that is why this is only for people who have credit through USAA. They can always charge it back if it is found to be fraudulent.
