Saudi Arabia Sees Strong iPhone 3G Launch

Cell carrier Mobily saw strong interest over the weekend for its Sunday iPhone 3G launch in Saudi Arabia. The company signed up some 25,000 iPhone subscribers within the first few hours of the combination iPod and smartphone's official rollout in the country, according to the Saudi Gazette.

Ali S. Al-Dakhee, Mobily's Youth Segment Manager, commented "In just a few hours of launch the number of walk-in customers and those who applied online reached 25,000."

Interest in the iPhone 3G appeared to be high, even though the handheld currently has only limited Arabic support. Users can't send or receive SMS messages in Arabic, and mobile Safari doesn't properly render Arabic text. Arabic support will, however, make its way to the iPhone in the next three months, according to a Mobily spokesperson.

An 8GB iPhone 3G will set Saudi customers back SR2,255, or SR2,650 for the 16GB model with a post-paid service contract. The post-paid plan costs SR99 a month and includes 75 free talk minutes, 75 free SMS messages, 199MB of data, and requires a 12 month agreement.

A pre-paid plan is also available with 250MB of data per month, but it does not include any free talk minutes or SMS messages. It requires a six month contract. The iPhone is priced at SR2,400 for the 8GB model, and SR2,800 for the 16GB model.
