SFR Lands French iPhone Deal
Thursday, February 26th, 2009 at 9:48 AM - by Jeff Gamet
SFR is set to become the second cell carrier in France to offer Apple's iPhone 3G. The company plans to launch its service packages on April 8, and will sell the combination iPod and smartphone in its stores and online.
The cell carrier will offer the 8GB model for €99 and €199 for the 16GB model. Services packages will be priced between €41.90 and €67.90 a month with a 24 month contract for unlimited data and SMS messages.
SFR is the first carrier to pen an iPhone distribution deal in France since Orange lost a court battle to keep its status as the exclusive iPhone service dealing in the country. The case stemmed from a complaint rival cell carrier Bouygues Telecom filed with the Competition Council in 2008. The company claimed that Orange's five-year deal with Apple posed "serious and immediate damage" to the French cell phone market.
Bouygues Telecom claimed it is negotiating with Apple, too, and hopes to stike its own iPhone deal soon.
