Sirius XM Radio Plans on iPhone App in Q2
Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 1:35 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Sirius XM Radio said Thursday that it expects to have its satellite radio service streaming to Apple iPhones and iPod touches in the 2nd quarter of this year. The comments came during the company's quarterly conference call with analysts, where executives said they expected to have an iPhone app that can stream Sirius broadcasts ready by that time, according to online news reports.
Sirius fans have been clamoring for such an application for some time, and the company is anxious to get access to the 17 million estimated iPhone an iPod touch users. Sirius broadcasts are subscription based, and the company's biggest source of subscribers are car-stereo users, something that requires a receiver.
The company also streams its broadcasts through its Web site for subscribers, and an iPhone app would allow them to tap into new subscribers who wouldn't have to buy a separate piece of hardware -- that could allow the company to gain subscribers it would not have otherwise had.
James Meyer, president of operations for Sirius, said in the conference call, "This is a large and interesting opportunity that will maintain our subscription-based economics while providing customers with easy access to our content through means other than our traditional satellite-based platform."
