Sony Considers PSP Cellphone Hybrid

Sony is considering using its PlayStation Portable (PSP) platform to launch a cell phone competitor for the iPhone according to a report by Japanese daily Nikkei (via Reuters). The project is in the beginning stages, with a team reportedly being organized in July to begin looking at options the company could pursue.
Sony's PSP an Nintendo's DS platforms have ruled the handheld gaming market for the last several years, but the explosive popularity of Apple's iPhone as a gaming platform is being perceived as a threat to both companies.
So far, Sony is mum on whether or not this report is accurate, telling BusinessWeek, for instance, that it is considering several options without actually denying the report.
An added wrinkle to this story is the fact that Sony has cell partner in the form of Sony Ericsson. For Sony to turn its PSP into a phone platform would effectively place one aspect of the electronics giant into direct competition with another arm.
Sony recently updated the PSP line with the PSP Go, a smaller and more compact addition to the family, that will ship in the Fall of 2009.
