Sport of Kings And More

For a brief moment last weekend many folks around the world forgot all about how bad the economy sucks, was not worry about the next round of layoffs at their place of work, or even if the company they work for would still be open for business on Monday morning. What became front and center in the minds of those who watch was whether or not Tiger Woods, on his first tournament after having reconstructive surgery on his knee several months ago, would still have the skillz needed to add another trophy to his record setting collection.

The matter was settled in a competition worthy of watching even by those who hate golf as Mr. Woods came from behind to sink a 12 foot putt on the 18th hole and walk away with the the big bucks.

The man still has it, what ever "it" is. Read the reports or listen to the commentators and you'll see or hear terms like "finesse" and "clutch" and "consistency".

None of that matters to me though, Tiger Woods is better at golf than most people, including yours truly, are at anything and I and in awe of his ability.

I tried my hand at golf once, I stuck with it for more than a year; more than enough time to know for certain that I have absolutely no talent for the game. Oh, I can hit the ball (most of the time) and if that's all you ask of me then I would still suck like the black hole at the center of our galaxy if compared to Mr. Woods, or anyone who knows which end of a club to hold, for that matter.

Still, some say the worth is in the effort and I will admit to enjoying the feel of a very rare, but well hit ball.

Whenever I hear of Mr. Woods taking to a tournament links I think about my second hand clubs gathering dust in my garage and wonder if I should take them up again. And, once again, I browse for tips to help improve my helpless game.

Luckily, golfing tips are easy to come by, especially in the iTunes Store, which is literally overflowing with podcasts from pros and wannabe pros looking to share their know-how.

For instance, take a look at Golf Tips Magazine's Golf Tips Video; the iTunes Store has over 40 episodes featuring local, national, and international pros offering up suggestions on how to improve everything from perfecting your drive to sinking difficult putts.

Of course, if it were that easy then there'd be no point in trying to play. Everyone would be experts and Mr. Woods would probably a tax lawyer with a funny first name.

Still, as I said earlier, the worth is in the effort, and your effort may improve by watching some or all Golf Tips Videos.

Some people might benefit from taking lessons from an instructor. I don't think I'm one of them. It's not that I can't take instruction, my reluctance to seek professional help is actually for the sake of the sanity of my would be teacher. After a few sessions with me I'm sure the guy would threaten me with bodily arm if I ever attempted to pick up a club again, or get carted off to the local loony house.

If you're like me then it may be best to take your instruction from afar and Golf Tips with Joe Beck is just the podcast for you.

Joe Beck is a PGA Pro Instructor and his 2 to 3 minute videos are actually quite good. They are high quality and Joe, being a seasoned instructor, breaks the lessons down into terms and demonstrations that even I can understand. There's even some nice graphics that highlight each point Joe makes. Pretty nice.

What isn't so nice about this video are all the silly ads that appear throughout the show. They are overlay ads which are distracting and obnoxious and some even cover up some of the action, making these golf tips far less effective than they might be otherwise.

Whoever did the overlays for this video should be fired ( and that's pretty harsh if you consider the state of the economy). They made the ads so that would be customers would rather boycott than buy from the show's sponsor.

Still, if you can get around the ads Golf Tips With Joe Beck is a good podcast, and it's free, of course, at the iTunes Store.

Not everyone is a golf-klutz like I am and they care little for lessons and tips. And there are some folks who could care less about that little white ball and would rather spent tee time slamming back martinis or something in the clubhouse. These folks like the atmosphere of golf, the trappings, the artwork (yes, artwork!), and the sociality of golf. To those souls I offer Golf Girl TV.

Golf Girl TV?

Patricia Hannigan gets in front of the camera and reports on the parties, meetings, the odd, and the interesting aspects of the world surrounding the Sport of Kings.

The show is a lot of fun and Patricia looks like she's having a great time. And why not? She checking out places and people many of us, golf fan or not, will never see.

There are 12 episodes of Golf Girl TV and a preview so far available at the iTunes Store and, unfortunately, new shows don't seem to have any consistent release schedule; "regularly" is all that's promised. But the episodes that are available are fun so check them out.

OK, that's a wrap for this week. Stop back next week for more free stuff.
