Steve Ballmer Insists Microsoft Will Not Build Its Own Phone
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 at 6:49 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer insisted Tuesday that his company was not going to develop its own smartphone, despite long rumors to the contrary. The comments came during a midyear conference with analysts, the same conference where Mr. Ballmer said he felt that, "all the consumer market mojo is with Apple."
Noting his company's #3 position in the smart phone
"People ask me, 'will you build your own phone?' It's not our strategy to build our own phone. It's our strategy to sell software that we can use and support across a wide range of device manufacturers to encourage choice. Choice in devices, choice in the operators."
These comments echo those made last week at Mobile World Congress, where Mr. Ballmer talked a lot about how the cell phone market needs more choice, and that Apple's proprietary model does not offer that choice.
There have been persistent rumors and speculation about Microsoft developing its own phone, the same way it developed the Zune digital media device. Mr. Ballmer and other company execs have repeatedly stressed that it would not do so, with his comments today during the midyear conference merely the latest.
