Taiwan Newspaper Reports 3.2 Megapixel Sensor Orders for iPhone
Friday, April 3rd, 2009 at 8:31 PM - by Bryan Chaffin
Taiwan-based newspaper DigiTimes reported Friday that Apple has began ordering 3.2 megapixel sensors for the built-in cameras on the company's iPhone product line. The newspaper also reported that the company has placed orders for 5 megapixel sensors for another, unannounced product to be released later in the year.
Apple's iPhone currently sports a 2.0 Megapixel camera, and according to DigiTimes, the orders are for the next upgrade to the device. The newspaper did not offer details on what product in which the 5 Megapixel sensors might be used.
The orders are being credited to Omnivision, an OEM for optics-related electronics.
DigiTimes has often published stories in the past about unannounced Apple products, almost always sourced within the Taiwanese manufacturers that actually produce Apple's products. Those outfits leak like sieves, but DigiTimes' stories have not always born fruit in the way of shipping Apple products.
