Total Music Gets Kiss of Death
Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at 8:04 AM - by Jeff Gamet
iTunes Store competitor Total Music won't be giving Apple a run for its money now that its backers have pulled the plug. Universal Music and Sony BMG decided to stop funding the subscription-based music service because of the weakening economy, and competition from online streaming music services and the iTunes Store, according to Billboard.
One anonymous insider said "Total Music as it is now, is over. With resources being limited these days, we prioritized everything and realized we could accomplish the same thing in some of the other areas where we were working."
The original idea behind Total Music was to build the cost of the service into the price of portable media players so that it appeared to customers as if the subscription service was free. Later, that changed when the company bought the Ruckus music service and began pushing Total Music as a licensable subscription service that other companies could bundle with their own services and products.
Total Music was also the focus of a Department of Justice investigation because of the secrecy surrounding the deals and acquisitions the company was making.
Apple, however, won't get a chance to see whether or not Total Music would pose a threat to the iTunes Store because it doesn't look like any companies signed on to use the service before it closed its doors.
