Unicom, Apple Discuss iPhone Deal
Thursday, March 5th, 2009 at 7:56 AM - by Jeff Gamet
Cell carrier China Unicom is negotiating with Apple in hopes of landing a deal to offer the iPhone 3G in China. Striking a deal with Apple would be a big win for Unicom, and could also give the company a competitive advantage over its and the biggest service provider in the country, China Mobile, according to CNN Money.
A deal with Unicom could make sense for Apple, too, since the cell carrier is in the process of building out its Wideband CDMA -- or 3G -- network. Using the iPhone 3G on China Mobile's network would mean the combination iPod and smartphone would be limited to slower data transmission speeds.
Unicom chief executive Chang Xiaobing confirmed his company is in talks with Apple, but wouldn't say how far the negotiations have progressed. So far, all he is saying is "We are in talks with many handset suppliers, including Apple."
China Unicom expects that 3G users will make up about 20 percent of its subscribers within three years. If a deal with Apple comes together, a substantial number of those could be iPhone users.
