Chillingo co-founder Chris Byatte originally saw the iPhone as "a huge disruptive force" and responded during the first year of the App Store's existence with 30 games released and a download total approaching 30 million. As the App Store matures and Apple becomes a dominant force in mobile gaming, Mr. Byatte sees big changes in store.

Q&A With Digital Chocolate Founder Trip Hawkins

If you're a gamer, Trip Hawkins likely needs no introduction: He founded venerable third party publisher Electronic Arts and was instrumental in convincing John Madden that the ex-Oakland Raiders coach should lend his name to a brand new football game. Mr. Hawkins later founded the ill-fated 3DO Company, which went out of business in 2003. Then he started Digital Chocolate, which develops games for mobile devices and has become a star player at the App Store. It's a circular turn of events, given the fact that Mr. Hawkins served as Apple's Director of Strategy and Marketing until 1982.

iPhone Gaming: ‘Something Big is Going On’

As this year's Game Developers Conference gets underway in San Francisco, it's clear that "something big is going on," as ex-Apple executive and Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins said of the sales of iPhone games by his new company, Digital Chocolate. Recent developments have also pointed to the possibility that the iPhone is the Wii of handheld gaming devices, as Glenda Adams, Aspyr Media's director of internal development, told me last fall.

The App Store: ‘Day of the Indie Developer’?

It's long been assumed that the days of independent game developers being able to compete with companies like Electronic Arts or Activision are long gone: videogames have grown so complex, the thinking goes, that the little guys simply can't put in the same resources. iShoot and Trism, however, are among several App Store games that have proven small developers can still compete, especially when the playing field is level.

Mac game developers are thrilled with the graphics capabilities of the new MacBooks, and three of them offer their thoughts. Gaming on the Mac has been in a rut for a while, but iPhone games have taken off.
