I have an old 500MHz iBook running 10.3.9. I would like to pick up a used/refurb ipod, but the specs on some of them require 10.4.something or higher. Anyway around this? What is the last generation that will work on my model without major tweaking?

Thanks much.

You may find that 10.4 runs better than 10.3.9.

I do know that the gen 3 iPods worked fine with 10.3.x.

10.4 is widely viewed as a more efficient OS than 10.3. Many people found it to be faster than 10.3 on older machines.

Just a note: if you only have 256 MB ram, you may want to boost that to 512 or more. No version of OS X will run well on 256 MB.
