I use my iPhone as a news reader as much as for any other purpose. I’m currently running Bloomberg, AP. NPR and WSJ news readers on my phone. What other news apps are you using and which ones do you prefer for retrieving news and information?

I use NetNewsWire on my iPhone, and am looking forward to the update that syncs with Google Reader.  I find AP slow and pedantic, but WSJ and Bloomberg are top notch for my needs.

I’ll add the USA TODAY, NYTimes and The Weather Channel apps to the list. They all work great for me, but I wish The Weather Channel could push weather alerts because crazy storms can sneak up on you really quick in the Colorado mountains.

I agree with Jeff about USA Today, NY Times and Weather Channel apps.

I prefer Thomson Reuters “News Pro” (free) to “AP Mobile” which I still have but will probably delete from my Touch. The Reuters app just runs a bit better and I pretty much get the same news.

I also have ‘WSJ’ - the free Wall St. Journal app, which does 2 cool things: first, it gives you everything from allthingsd.com (which the Journal owns) so you don’t need the separate allthingsD app, and second, it pierces the pay-wall the WSJ has and lets you read articles for free that you’d have to pay for via membership if you went to wsj.com with a browser.

NewsDesk offers aggregation of major stories from UK sources and elsewhere (NYTimes, BBC News, Aljazeera, Reuters, CNN), but when you click on a headline it sends you into a minibrowser to read the article and doesn’t look at good as something like the NY Times app:

News UK Lite is a free version of an app which aggregates the top stories from major British news sources (BBC News, Telegraph UK, UK Guardian) and allows for some customization:

The company which produced News UK Lite has similar versions available for download: News Canada Lite & News Australia Lite. I just noticed they have a USA version that aggregates top stories from your choice of CNN, USA Today, MSNBC, BBC News, Fox News, Bloomberg, LATimes, CNET, MSN Money and others. Nice! Unfortunately the iTunes Store keeps giving me an error when I try to download it!

Thanks for the response. I think I’ll be busy download some new news apps this weekend. 

I use the mobile web version of Google Reader. I have been very satisfied with it, and actually do most of my reading there rather than the full-size Google Reader on my computer.

I too will be checking out NetNewWire again, once a version comes out which syncs with Google Reader. At that time I’ll evaluate it again and see if I want to switch or not.

Byline is a very polished RSS Newsreader that offers Google Synching that I have switched to while I wait for NetNewsWire Mobile to be finished (I’m synching Desktop NNW with Google Reader already). Byline is reasonably priced and (baring a few tips it could take from NNW Mobile)very nice to use, esp. Landscape mode.

The NY Times app is pretty great, although less so now that they have big ads.

I wish they’d let us pay a few dollars to turn the ads off.
