In-Depth Review

Iconz Cases

XtremeMac's Iconz line of iPod cases allow you to dress your iPod in something more than the typical colors and designs most manufacturers offer. Three lines of Iconz cases are available for the 5G iPod and iPod nano, one featuring characters from TV and movies, and the two sports teams from the NBA and Major League Baseball.

The Iconz cases feature a 2mm hardened plastic shell that should prove itself more durable than thinner silicone skins. The finish is thus smoother and less tactile than those more rubbery cases. The iPod slide in from the bottom and the case's grip and friction then holds it secure. The bottom of the iPod thus remains completely exposed and flush with the case, ideal for using some accessories that require such a set up, but possibly leaving your iPod open to damage if it happened to fall and land bottom end first.

Fortunately that's just about the only damage your iPod could sustain when it's wearing an Iconz, as the case features both an integrated screen protector and also covers your click wheel. On our 5G iPod sample the screen protector was crystal clear, but the nano Iconz' screen protector produced an ever so slight distortion.

Like other cases of this style, the click wheel protection is effective but negatively impacts operation. There's a notable reduction in sensitivity between your thumb and the click wheel on account of the plastic in between, while the 5G iPod case required us to press down slightly just to make contact with the click wheel.

Sports fans may also wish to note that team availability is limited (see below).

The Bottom Line

XtremeMac's Iconz cases are simple and effective while packing a genuinely unique design—good enough to distinguish themselves from the masses and justify the price tag.

Iconz cases available for 30GB and 60GB 5G iPod ($29.95) include: Tweety Bird, Darth Vader, Speed Racer, Homer Simpson, Batman, Superman, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and L.A. Lakers. iPod nano owners ($24.95) can select from: Tweety Bird, Scooby Doo, Batman, Speed Racer, Simpsons, Star Wars, Spongebob, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants, L.A. Angels, Dwayne Wade (Miami Heat), LeBron James (Houston Comets), Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, L.A. Lakers, and Detroit Pistons.
