In-Depth Review

PDO Aluminum V2

The PDO Aluminum V2, from Portable Device Outfitters, is an aircraft grade anodized aluminum case for your 5th generation iPod Video with a unique feature -- a soft silicone cover to protect your iPod's clickwheel.

Beyond the clickwheel cover, the PDO Aluminum V2 is a high-quality aluminum case much like others on the market, featuring a clear plastic screen cover, a shock-absorbing neoprene lining, removable swivel belt clip, optional neck lanyard, and a beefy hinge.

Like many hard cases there are cutouts for the dock connector, hold switch, and headphone jack. While this makes using your iPod much more convenient, it also means that both ends of your iPod are exposed to outside elements and possible scratches. And although you can connect an Apple USB dock connector cable without removing your iPod from the case, you can't insert your iPod into most devices with a dock such as the Apple dock and many iPod speaker systems. Unfortunately, the same thing happens with almost all iPod cases, so I wouldn't base a purchase decision on this particular shortcoming.

The PDO Aluminum V2 comes in black with a red, blue, or black clickwheel cover or silver with a black clickwheel cover and is compatible with all 5th generation iPods -- 30, 60, or 80GB.

Note: PDO also offers a version of this case for first and second generation iPod nanos for US$24.99.

The Bottom Line

The PDO Aluminum V2 is a well constructed aluminum case. Its fit and finish are top notch and the soft clickwheel cover doesn't impede use of the clickwheel in any way. If you occasionally use your iPod with peanut butter, burger grease, or other slimy substances on your fingers, this is the case you want. But even if you don't this is a solid case at a reasonable price.

Just The Facts

Pros:Exclusive clickwheel cover, plastic screen cover, some shock protection.

Cons:Cutouts may allow contamination or scratching.
