Speck ToughSkin case for iPhone 3G
Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 4:00 AM - by Bob LeVitus
The Speck ToughSkin case lives up to its name with a myriad of unique protective features and thoughtful design. If protecting your iPhone against bumps and drops is your primary concern, this may be the perfect case for you.
I mean, just look at the thing... its obviously built to protect your iPhone with its thick textured black rubber construction and even thicker corners to provide additoinal protection from bumps:

And that's not all. A black plastic frame fits over the front of your iPhone to provide added stability and protection as shown here:

Here's an example of the thoughtful design I mentioned: It has a unique hinged bottom you can fold back so you can dock your iPhone without removing it from the case.
Another nice touch is the detachable holster/swivel belt-clip. It provides a nice secure grip on the case and allows the iPhone to be placed face-in or face-out in the holster.

And the swiveling belt-clip is designed to double as a tabletop stand in both orientations -- landscape (as shown below) or portrait (not shown).

So far so good, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention a couple of things I found somewhat irritating. First, considering the design and purpose of this case, I'm surprised it doesn't include some type of screen protecttion. Many less protective and less expensive cases have it, so its omission here is curious to say the least. And speaking of price, at $34.95 this case is a bit more expensive than many others. Finally, this is probably the bulkiest case I've tested. There's good reason for that bulk but it makes this case less pocket-friendly than some.
The Bottom Line
If you're looking for a case that provides maximum protection against bumps and rough handling, I can't think of a better choice than this one.
Just The Facts
Pros:Thick rubber provides maximum protection, dockable, detachable multi-function belt-clip.
Cons:No screen protection, bulky, somewhat expensive.
