In-Depth Review
TuffWrap
Monday, January 2nd, 2006 at 11:00 PM - by Misha Sakellaropoulo
XtremeMac's TuffWrap cases represent another take on ruggedized silicone skins. Like most offerings in this category, extra protection simply means thicker rubber. The TuffWraps also sport a large, removable screen protector and a decidedly less rugged plastic cling for the click wheel.
TuffWrap 3-pack & TuffWrap Accent |
Design wise, the basic TuffWrap offers nothing particularly unique from other monochrome skins on the market. Tread-like sides purport to make gripping the iPod nano easier, but in reality we've found these rubber moldings simply lend more credibility to a ruggedized look than providing any significant help in holding on to your nano.
For those who see the world in two colors, the new TuffWrap Accents serve up an extra splash of color for the same price, but are only available individually for $19.95 (standard TuffWraps also come in a value-minded three-pack for $24.95).
The iPod nano slides easily into its new TuffWrap home through the bottom, which remains exposedhandy for accessories, but maybe not so much for those looking for beefier all-around protection.
Our only real gripe about the TuffWrap is the lame plastic click wheel protector. These work great for screens but look awkward on the click wheel, where inevitable air bubbles create a sloppy look and the smoothness of the click wheel is diminished by the plastic. A thin piece of silicone as part of the case would have been both a more attractive and more effective solutions, especially for keeping foreign particles from rubbing under the TuffWrap skin from the click wheel.
Bottom Line
About the best thing going for the TuffWrap is its price, which is a fair $20. Better ruggedized cases are available at $30 and up, but at this price the TuffWrap does well, especially in its Accent variety. Better yet: get two nano-toting friends to throw down for three-pack and solid nano protection will be yours for less than $10 a piece.
Just The Facts
Pros:effective protection, nice large screen protector, good color combinations
Cons:no belt clip, lanyard, or any other extra
