In-Depth Review

iTrip Pocket

Griffin Technology's iTrip Pocket is a teeny tiny FM transmitter roughly the size of a book of matches and not much wider than a dock connector, as shown here:

iTrip Pocket's operation couldn't be simpler. . . you use the left and right arrows to tune it to an appropriate FM station, which appears on your iPod display as shown here:

To save a station as a preset, just press and hold the 1, 2, or 3 button for three or four seconds.

Because iTrip Pocket is powered by your iPod, it requires no batteries. That's good and bad news. It's good because it allows the device to be tiny and never run out of juice, but it's bad because your iPod battery drains noticeably faster with it than without it.

Audio quality was consistently good in my testing in Austin, TX.

iTrip Pocket is specifically designed to fit the 2nd generation iPod nano as shown here:

While it doesn't look as cool, you can also use it with 1st generation iPod nanos, and 4th and 5th generation full-size iPods.

There is one last thing that's not really specific to the iTrip Pocket and that is that if your car radio antenna is detachable like mine (I drive a Mini Cooper), FM transmitters seem to work better when you detach it. Of course the downside is that you can't listen to radio without re-attaching your antenna, but if you know you're going to be listening only to your iPod, give it a try -- it seems to help quite a bit.

The Bottom Line

The iTrip Pocket is a tiny, slick FM transmitter that is particularly attractive with the 2nd generation iPod nano but perfectly serviceable with other compatible iPods. If you're looking for a very small FM transmitter for your iPod with a dock connector you need look no further.
