Play Doom on Your iPod!
Tuesday, August 9th, 2005 at 6:25 PM - by
A major milestone in the iPod culture has been reached, as the iPodLinux Project has made it possible to play the classic 3D first person shooter Doom on an iPod photo (which is currently just called iPod).
Playing Doom on your iPod requires running podzilla on your iPod, though 4th generation color screen iPods are not (yet) actually supported by the iPodLinux Project. Such is the nature of an open source project where users are free to take whatever risks they wish, and there are images of the game being played.
Installing podzilla allows you to choose whether you want to boot your iPod up in Linux, or with Apple's own firmware so you can use your iPod normally each time you turn it on. (Note that iPodObserver has not yet verified this.)
Doom was released to the open source community long ago by id Software, the game's developer. Since then, it, along with Linux, has been ported to every conceivable device on which it might run.
You can find more information on the podzilla and Doom projects at the iPodLinux Web site.
