Apple Plans Major Music Announcement for Sept. 7 [Update]

Apple Computer on Monday sent out invitations to the media, including this publication, for a special event to be held in San Francisco on Sept. 7. Referring to the announcement of the iPod four years ago, the invitations read: "1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again."

Apple has used such events to launch the iTunes Music Store, iPod photo and iPod: U2 Special Edition, and other such products and services in recent years. In keeping with those events, Apple has not revealed what specifically it will unveil, but the reference to "1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything" suggests that it could be related to Apple's music business.

In his own write up of the event at CNet, John Borland referred to recent news articles and speculates that the company might unveil a video iPod. Or perhaps Apple will finally take the wraps off the iTunes-enabled Motorola phone. Other options, which don't seem to merit such a major event, include the introduction of a flash-based iPod mini or larger-capacity iPod shuffles.

From, "1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again!" to " a dozen songs on your cellphone!" ? Sorry, I don't think so.

I think we should assume that this notice implies that Something is going to "change everything" yet again. So I think chances are good that it is not going to be an incremental improvement to what already exists- ie, a 2+ gig shuffle (ridiculous without a display) or a 4 gig flash mini- neither of these announcements would really "change" anything. I think it's going to be something NEW. I suspect they worded the invite that way for a reason.

my guess that the next generation will officially be released.

now.. how will it change everything again? think of an iPod, give it the quality's of a psp, then sprinkle the super-special magical blue dust that makes an Apple product just work!

Wasn't "1,000 songs in your pocket" the ORIGINAL iPod slogan? When the iPod came out it had nothing to do with anything else that Apple made. If that's the case, then this might have nothing to do with music or macs at all.
