iPod nano Will 'Rock Your World,' Says Columnist

David Sheets, writing for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, says that while "initial sales [of the iPod nano] were underwhelming," the new device's major allure is really its technology, not its appearance. He observes: "And that could spell the end for the digital storage workhorse: the hard disk."

Mr. Sheets purchased a nano and put it through its paces, mostly gushing over its capabilities, although he does note that the MP3 player's small screen makes viewing photos almost pointless. "Who’s going to see them without a magnifying glass?" he asks. "Nevertheless, it’s a nice thought on Apple’s part."

By using flash technology, however, the iPod nano sets itself apart from hard drive-based MP3 players that are prone to skipping music and disk crashes. Mr. Sheets writes: "Flash’s potential seems limitless; all it needs now is promotion. If iPod nano succeeds behind the force of Apple’s massive marketing machine, then the ubiquitous, spinning, crash-prone hard disk drive is well on its way to a museum shelf."

If Apple made more black nano’s, they’d be flying off shelves. I image they’ll be breaking out the black Rust-Oleum in Cupertino any day now.

It was Shaw Wu who started the rumor the nano wasn’t selling well; a rumor which is somewhat dubious. But demand for the black nano does seem to be a lot stronger, and Apple is producing more white nanos.

These guys are both 'tards. The nano is one of the biggest product rollouts in Apple's history. Steve Jobs made it clear that there is a MUCH higher introductory stock level of nanos in the channel than any previous iPod. But these 2 morons are freaking out because the nanos haven't "sold out" yet- of course, they don't know what stock levels they are talking about, because that info's not available to them.

Gee, is it better to "sell out" a stock of 150, or to "only" sell half of a stock of 600?

I can hear these two rocket scientists scratching their pointy little heads.

Shaw Wu and David Sheets are idiots, and just plain lazy journalists, because they are pulling this "analysis" out of their nether regions. They have no sales figures to discuss whatsoever.

Hey, I think I just made a pun. "Anal-ysis"

Is that why its #3 on the Amazon best-sellers list currently?

Face it, you know zilch about Apple... I'm sure we could go back to the Performa days and quote a lot of products that had smaller rollouts than the Nano.

Heck, the Nano's even in TIME magazine this week... its getting a lot of attention, even by Apple standards.

That WAS a pun - "smallest" rollout - reference to size of the nano, not size of the distribution..... don't get so wrapped up in fighting that you miss the point of the post.

A series of artist branded iPods would be cool, like the Rolling stones iPod or the Pink Floyd iPod... And the U2 is no longer a special edition, it's been aroung for almost 2 years now...
