Subway Maps for Your iPod, Sort Of

The Man has come down on William Bright, the operator of a site called iPod Subway Maps. In this case, The Man took the form of both the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) and San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) organization, both of which asked iPod Subway Maps to remove maps taken from their respective Web sites due to copyright infringement.

"First New York City, now San Francisco," wrote Mr. Bright on his Web site. "I've received a cease and desist letter from the Web site manager of the San Francisco BART. This is the second one in a week now. The New York City cease and desist is now online as well."

At issue are subway maps designed to be viewed on iPod photos and iPod nanos. According to a Wired News report, Mr. Bright originally took maps available for download from both agencies, and used Photoshop to cut them up into the right size and resolution for viewing on photo-capable iPods.

Wired News noted, too, that the MTA in particular has been very aggressive recently in protecting its copyrights, in part because the agency licenses some of those copyrights to companies for commercial uses in an effort to raise money for New York's very expensive mass transit system.

Mr. Bright has pulled the copyrighted material from his Web site, later putting up his own maps of the BART system.
