Apple Canada Begins Refunding 'iPod Tax'

Apple Canada has started the claims process for refunding the "iPod tax" levied on all iPods purchased from Dec. 13, 2003 to Dec. 21, 2004. The extra charge was placed on the MP3 players on behalf of musicians and record companies, according to Canada's National Post, at the rate of $15 for iPods up to 10GB and $25 beyond that.

In July, Canada's Supreme Court upheld a December 2004 Federal Court ruling that overturned the policy. The Canadian Coalition for Fair Digital Access had sued on behalf of Apple Canada, Sony Canada, Dell Computer Corp. of Canada and such retailers as Wal-Mart Canada and Future Shop.

Approximately $4 million was collected during the year that the levy was in place. Apple Canada has said that any money not claimed by Dec. 31, 2005 will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.
