Apple to Replace Cracked iPod nano Screens

Apple Computer said Tuesday that problems with iPod nano screens breaking, as documented at FlawedMusicPlayer.com are not a design issue, but rather an issue of vendor quality that affected a small number of units. Furthermore, the company is now replacing those units that do have problems through AppleCare.

"This is a real but minor issue involving a vendor quality problem in a small number of units," Apple vice president Phil Schiller said in a statement to Macworld. "In fact, this issue has affected less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the total iPod nano units that we've shipped. It is not a design issue."

Since receiving the news, Matthew Peterson, the owner of FlawedMusicPlayer.com [which not redirects to Mr. Peterson's .Mac page] took down the testimonials and images of broken iPod nanos, and replaced it with a simple "Apple does the right thing," along with a short message thanking the company for "taking the issue seriously."

Mr. Schiller also addressed complaints of iPod nano screens scratching more easily than other iPods, which he said Apple does not think is a widespread issue. He also asserted that iPod nano screens are made of the same material as 4th Generation iPods.

"If customers are concerned about scratching we suggest they use one of the many iPod nano cases to protect their iPod," he said.

Phil Schiller: "If customers are concerned about scratching we suggest they use one of the many iPod nano cases to protect their iPod, even though they won't be able to see their pretty ripoff device, and even though considering other devices like vcr's and walkmans don't require cases."

Apple was quick in responding to those claims, and is certainly doing the right thing...obviously, when production is outsourced, there is always a problem or two...GO APPLE!

And by the way, NO device is scratch-proof...get real, people.

Funny every moble phone I have had has not only scratched but in at least one case it has shed its silvery skin faster than a snake, yet not a word about this in the public domain or indeed Toshiba DVD players that give up the ghost after a year. It seems the name on the device is more important to some people's rationale in these matters than reality.

... and in case you want to take notes the phone that shed its skin and indeed stopped working altogether after 13months is the NEC e616.

The DVD player that shed its functionality is the SD 210e. Mind you that at least looks pretty as a paper weight.

If you're really worried about scratches and screen cracking;

http://matias.ca/ipodarmor/

http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/ivault/index.php

http://www.styluscentral.com/apmiipalcawi.html

and a number of others.

Note: They don't have models for the Nano yet but give them a few weeks and I'm sure they'll be out.

1/10th of 1 percent? Geez, even with Apple's strong sales numbers, this is such a minute amount, yet all this hullaballoo on the Net about it makes it seem like a GM recall.

The sensationalist news services that most people pay attention to do that. This spring we got a Toyota Prius. At about that same time the news filled up with reports for a week or two about stalling problems in the Prius. We dug into it and found that it was just a handful of instances out on nearly 200,000 Priuses sold in the US. That's something like 1/100 of 1%, yet to read or watch the news you have thought that every other one was stalling and killing its occupants.

Tge one calling others names is making one of himself … instead of going to bed. Tomorrow is a school day, kiddo. Time to hit the sheets!

My nano has more scratches than my iPod photo, but then, I take it in and out of my pocket constantly, and it rubs against a lot more things because it is so much smaller … Tink I'm going to get a sleeve for it …

Let's see: people put a naked iPod Nano in their pockets with keys, change, pocketknives, and the like--and they're surprised that it gets scratched? The case is PLASTIC, ferchrissakes. Move sharp metal objects against plastic and the plastic will probably get scratched. Heck, the paint on my car behind the door handle is scratched from FINGERNAILS. Would you carry an iBook loose in a backpack?

OTOH, my 3G iPod is nearly scratch-free because it stays in a Vaja iVolution case all the time. (The case has an opening for the sync cable.)

As for screens being scratched: folks, the PDA users have been facing that for years. We use little thingies called "screen protectors." You can get the same sort of clear (nearly invisible when applied) protector for the iPod Nano.

I wonder how many of the cracked/broken screens resulted from people sitting on the iPod Nano or with the Nano in a tight front pocket? The iPod and Mini were probably too thick to carry in a back pocket and would certainly be less susceptible to bending than the much thinner Nano.

FWIW, you can get pants that have pockets that are perfect for iPods, etc. They carry the devices lower on your thigh, rather than up near where your body bends when you sit down.

Try this: open up your iBook or PowerBook (or other laptop). Set it down on the top case, i.e., with the display facing up, rather than back. Now, sit your butt squarely on the screen. Did it crack (the screen, not your butt)? If it did, SUE THE MANUFACTURER!
