Disney Debuts Mix Sticks: Flash MP3 Players With Memory Card Slots

Disney on Thursday introduced Mix Sticks, MP3 players that come in pink and purple Forever Princess, chrome Disney and purple and green Tinker Bell (not available online yet) variations. They come with 128MB of storage but also offer slot for using Disney Mix Clips -- memory cards loaded with music from artists popular with the grade school age set -- as well as tracks copied to blank SD or MMC flash cards.

The US$49.99 Mix Sticks feature a 10-hour rechargeable battery, stereo earbuds, a USB 2.0 connector and a lanyard with a safety release. Disney expects to have them in stores by mid-October.

In addition to the four Mix Clips collections available on the ship date, Disney will also offer Mix Stuff, accessories for use with the Mix Stocks. A Disney Jam Stand ($39.99) features a battery charger, stereo speakers and lights that flash while the music plays. Other add-ons include a USB-capable wall charger, two different types of headphones and pink and gray carrying cases. Pricing for those items will be $9.99 to $14.99.

Laugh, but it seems like a pretty good deal to me... a lot easier to buy that for your kid than an iPod, or even a Shuffle.

We'll see. Elementary school kids, especially girls, love this sort of stuff. I have a 4-H horse club, with kids from 9-18. Some of the younger ones have toy horses with long pink (or blue!) manes and tails, wear pink t-shirts, etc. They'd probably go ape over this player.

Yep, hate 'em if you want, but this isn't a bad deal at all. It's the kind of packaging that young kids (6-10) will go for, and it reinforces the Disney brand. Whether parents will want kids that young running around with headphones will be the key, but Disney has a decent offering here for those that do.

I, for one, wouldn't want my kids getting such an early start on the deterioration of their hearing.

Is that an Apple click-wheel with a Mickey Mouse face ?

Even if it doesn't have the functionality, it sure has the look of a lawsuit just waiting to happen …

Biff,

Don't worry... you'll still have your iPod. But, honestly...you don't have kids, do you. My 4-year old daughter couldn't care less about Apple vs. MS vs. Sony vs. Dell vs. HP (ad nauseum). And she shouldn't.

She's only 4 but this is right up her alley, right along with "My Little Pony" and "Polly Pocket" dolls.

Her first computer will be a Mac, but this could definitely be her first MP3 player.
