New XBox Plays Music from iPod

The new XBox 360 can connect directly to an iPod letting you play music and slideshows directly on your TV, bringing us one step closer to an all-in-one home entertainment center. Microsoft demonstrated plugging in an iPod mini using a standard iPod USB cable during a presentation in London, then using the stored music as a sound track for a video game.

The German website, Heise Online notes that the music must be either MP3 or WAV format for the XBox to recognize it, and iLounge also notes that it can connect to other MP3 players, digital cameras and hard drives. With these other devices connected, you can create and play picture slideshows complete with musical soundtracks, but the XBox is limited since can't play back video.

Isn't this kinda useless? I mean, the songs you download from iTunes are in 'AAC' format not mp3, right? So the Xbox 360 wouldn't be able to play any songs you bought from iTunes?

If so, its kinda pointless to me.

Yet another attractive but utterly useless feature from Microsoft. And also your Xbox tends to be at home, and so does your mac. So I'd rather play my music directly from the mac or my home stereo. Typical Microsoft...

The odds are, I'll bet, that the 360 will only talk to PC formatted Ipods anyway. Have you tried connecting a Mac formatted Ipod to a PC? I'm sure it'll be the same with the Xbox 360.
