ABC Affiliates Start 'Vidcasting' News Broadcasts

ABC's New York and Chicago affiliates are now producing video podcasts, which some call "vidcasts," that can be downloaded through the iTunes Music Store and viewed on the new iPods. Journalism.co.uk's Robert Andrews reported that the Chicago affiliate started releasing audio podcasts enhanced with still images in July and is now offering news segments roughly three-and-a-half minutes long.

The downloads are free. Kevin Carpenter, online operations manager of the Chicago station, told Mr. Andrews that the quality of the files is "suitable for full screen computer playback." He noted that the file size is less than 8MB and takes "only a few seconds longer than the audio-only version" to download over a broadband connection. The video podcasts can be easily converted to MP3 files, Mr. Cartpenter added.

Yeah, and I was surprised when flipping channels yesterday as I'm laying on my couch sick with stomach flu that of all things, The Guiding Light soap opera is now offering their shows on Podcast. The actor promoting it was even wearing one with the white earbuds in his ears.

iPods rule the world!!!!!

Vidcasting will usher in a new cultural technology chapter. Vidcasting by ABC is just the beginning this new medium, soon other big names will follow suit. "Vidcasting" is official & legitimate name and cutting edge application. Vidcasting will be much more popular than podcasting!
