Napster Continues to Push Subscription Music to College Students

Napster campus representatives at Cornell University hosted a Napster Night on Monday to promote the free access to Napster To Go offered to the school's students. An article at the Cornell Daily Sun, which was linked to by MacDailyNews, noted that the Student Assembly will soon vote on using the student activities fee to fund the program again next year.

Daily Sun reporter Alex Lebowitz said that "students were inundated with free Napster t-shirts, stickers, ringtones, water bottles and hats" during Monday night's event. Access to Napster To Go is US$5 monthly per student, a price that would increase to $6 to $8 if the program is renewed, according to Napster campus rep Joseph Rudnick, who said that 10,000 Cornell students registered for it last year.

However, as Mr. Lebowitz pointed out in his article, Napster To Go isn't compatible with the iPod, which dominates the MP3 player industry. On the flip side, he said, "60 dollars a year for unlimited music downloads is unmatched by any other program. For example, using iTunes, a customer would only be able to download 60 songs in a year to match the price of Napster."

The reason why the 60 songs a year analogy doesn't work for me to buy into Napster is that those are 60 songs that I want. With Napster's subscription model I would get access to thousands of songs. But unfortunately for them most of them I don't want. So I continue to purchase from iTMS.

and of course, while you can rent those songs for a year-- if you wish to continue to use those 60 songs, then you need to buy more months of use

And what marketing geniuses did they hire to come up with their new slogan "Own Nothing, Experience Everything"?!?!?!

Apple is credited with making the lack of a screen on the shuffle appear to be more of a lifestyle choice than a design shortcoming, but lil nappy is off their rocker if "owning nothing" is a good way to sell something!!!

Apple is credited with making underfeatured products appear to be more of a interface simplification choice than a design shortcoming, but lil nappy is off their rocker if "1,000 songs. Impossibly small." is a good way to sell something!!!
