Apple On the Prowl For Flash RAM

Apple is looking for a supplier of NAND Flash memory chips for iPods, according to an inSpectrum Technology report. Apple has been receiving memory chips from Samsung and Toshiba, but may be turning to Hynix since neither company can keep up with demand.

Samsung and Apple had been negotiating a joint venture for producing RAM for Flash-based iPods, but that deal fell through, and Toshiba has been focusing on supplying its partner, SanDisk.

Hynix is likely to start by supplying 512MB and 1GB chips for the iPod shuffle, and then ramp up development of higher capacity chips if it reaches an agreement with Apple.

Demand for the iPod shuffle and nano, both Flash-based models, remains high, putting the pressure on Apple to keep production levels up. If it doesn't strike a memory deal soon, it may have trouble meeting consumer demand moving into the holiday selling season.
