Disney Bypasses iTunes, Mac Users With iPod-Enabled Narnia Clip

The Walt Disney Co. has released a new iPod-ready video clip from the upcoming movie Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but not through iTunes. In fact, the Maven software that automatically downloads new video files and synchronizes them with an iPod doesn't work on the Mac, although Mac users can watch the content on the Narnia Web site.

Direct Marketing News reported on the development on Monday, quoting Maven vice-president of marketing Todd Boes as saying: "[Disney is] following where the consumers are. We all know they're on their devices and less on television." Macworld UK's Jonny Evans noted the article and added the information about the lack of Macintosh support.

What else are they downloading to user's computers? I don't fully trust they people, Disney and the Direct Marketing Industry. Maybe the reason it doesn't work on the Mac is that they can't download spyware to us.

Nobody can download spyware TO you. They have to upload it to you. You download from them.

Other than that, I agree with your comment.

Haha that would be hilarious if right after Sony gets bitten for licensing shitty DRM software, Disney gets in trouble for striking a deal with a company that bundles spyware in their media manager software. I'd be somewhat surprised if Maven does bundle spyware in their install though. That wouldn't do much for the company's future.

I'm a rep with Maven Networks and I wanted to let you know that the Macworld UK article is incorrect - the Narnia video iPod feature *does* work with Macs. I've listed the URL below where you can get the application. Page down to the video iPod image and click Get It Now - it will add the videos to a folder you specify (should be where you store your music/video files) and sync with iTunes the next time you launch it.

I understand there's a lot of strange spyware out there these days, but Maven's technology is *not* spyware or adware. If it helps, feel free to check out our privacy policy: http://www.maven.net/company/acceptable_use_policy.php

Where to get the Narnia video iPod application (for Mac/Windows): http://disney.a.content.maven.net/mvms/vfs/disney/disneypictures/live/install/startPage/narnia/jump.html
