iPod One of Top 10 IT Stories of the Year

IDG News Service has named the iPod one of its top 10 IT news stories of the year. Reporter Marc Ferranti wrote: "The 2001 launch of the iPod ... is still lifting company fortunes. Stoking user interest with the launch of the iPd nano in September, Apple's fiscal 2005 fourth quarter profit was the best operating quarter in company history."

In addition, Mr. Ferranti noted: "The iPod's 'halo effect' has also helped the Mac from becoming history: on the Mac side, Apple shipped 1.23 million units in its fourth quarter, the second highest quarterly shipment total in the company's history."

The other top IT stories of the year were: Oracle's purchase of Siebel; HP firing CEO Carly Fiorina; Sony dropping Nonuyuki Idei for Howard Stringer as chairman and group CEO, marking the first time a foreigner has led the company; the continued stratospheric rise of Google's stock price; and the emergence of the Web as a delivery platform for software and services.

Rounding out the list were: Microsoft's launch of the Xbox 360, seen as the company's "play for the digital home"; AMD's lawsuit against Intel; Sony's music CD copy protection fiasco; and the news that Time Warner has been trying to sell AOL.
