Apple May Keep iPod Express Checkout at its Stores

This past holiday season, Apple's retail stores implemented "iPod Express," an area where customers could purchase only iPods. The plan was to speed checkout times, although Ars Technica reported that, according to Apple retail blog ifoAppleStore, the process had some glitches.

Ars Technica followed up on Thursday with a report that Apple is considering keeping the iPod Express area after the holiday season. One aspect of the checkout area that apparently bothered consumers was the idea of giving out their e-mail addresses so they could receive receipts digitally, although BusinessWeek's Byte of the Apple column said: "Steve Jobs believes that many people who are comfortable buying online ... will not only accept but will actually prefer getting their receipts electronically."

BusinessWeek columnist Peter Burrows added: "Also, the wireless, paperless checkout gives Apple an opportunity to improve in-store service, as well." An unnamed Apple Store source told him: "Checkout can come to you, instead of you going to checkout." While Mr. Burrows acknowledged that "there will be glitches," he believed that "Apple is onto something important here.

At the Apple Store in the Woodlands Mall in Houston, there was an expressline of sorts that was for anything that was small and easy to check out. The clerk had a mobile register device and checked me out in a matter of seconds. I wish more stores had such a great mobile express service!!!!!
