New Honda Fit Includes iPod Music Link as Dealer Accessory

Honda on Sunday announced that the 2007 Honda Fit, a subcompact five-door hatchback that will go on sale in the U.S. this April, will include the car maker's iPod Music Link as a dealer accessory. With the Music Link installed, iPod users can control the device through the audio head unit, with album and song information shown on the LCD screen. Music Link also charges the iPod's battery.

Chrysler on Sunday said that it is adding iPod integration in most of its 2006 model vehicles. Other car manufacturers are also jumping on the bandwagon, as evidenced by an Apple announcement last January that Mercedes-Benz USA, Volvo, Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari would offer iPod integration for their vehicles in 2005.

Toyota remains one of the few holdouts. I'd really like to have iPod integration in the Prius I plan to buy later this year.

Where is this info obtained? Because the current Honda Music Link does NOT display album/song information on the LCD screen. Is Honda releasing another version of Music Link then?

I had the Music Link for iPod installed in my 2006 Acura RL a few days ago. At my request the dealer will be removing it and refunding my money in another few days.

DO NOT buy this product! It is a dog. Disappointing, complicated to use, requires installation of intrusive and clunky software on your computer, no visual link to the nav screen. I doubt that Honda or Acura will be offering this add-on much longer, but if they do, resist the temptation to get it!

Buyer be aware... Latest press release (4/1/06) on the Fit has removed the statement about display song/album info on LCD. Also, looking at the last page of the installation guide posted by College Hills Honda. It clearly still uses the TTS (Text-to-Speech).

"Fit will also offer the Honda Apple(R) iPod(R) Music Link(R) as a dealer-installed Genuine Honda Accessory. The iPod Music Link allows the user's iPod (sold separately) to interact with the audio system, plus charge its battery."

We made a video for a class project involving the Honda Fit. We mention the iPod hook-up in the video, but also included a Video iPod version of it. Feel free to check it out:

Warning! I purchased a Fit on April 25 and for the most part love it. However, the Music Link was the deciding factor in getting the car and it does not work as advertised. What is worse is that my loaded 60 gig iPhoto died after installing the TTS software.

I am extremely dissatisfied in the Honda Music Link system for the iPod. It is the worst money I have ever spent. The user interface is a joke. I don't know how Honda can sell this option in good conscience. I am not the only one who feels this way. (See the review at: http://nuxx.net/wiki/Honda_Music_Link_iPod_Adapter_Review) I wish I had read this review before I purchased this option. It is next to impossible to find anything (playlist, genre, artist, album, etc.). Apple should be mad at Honda for using the iPod name on such a bad product.
