Apple has launched a countdown event to celebrate the billionth song sold at the iTunes Music Store (iTMS). Every 100,000th song downloaded wins a prize package that includes a black 4GB iPod nano and a US$100 iTunes Music Card. The grand-prize winner who downloads song number one billion wins a prize package that includes 20-inch iMac, 10 60GB iPods, and a $10,000 iTunes Music Card.

Apple also plans to create a full-ride scholarship to a "world-renowned" music school in the name of the grand-prize winner.
Like previous milestone countdown contests, the iTunes Web site has a counter showing how many songs have been purchased so far.
