Video iPod Sees New Challenger

The Viliv P1 Portable Media Player, which was launched in Korea last summer, is coming to the United States next month. According to the Mobile Mag Web site, the video iPod challenger features a 4-inch display, a 30GB hard drive, a Compact Flash slot and support for the mPEG 1/2/4, DivX and Xvid video formats, as well as MP3, WMA and OGG audio. Its battery can handle six hours of video or 11 hours of audio.

I only see one problem...

It doesn't interface good enough with iTunes.

It might do well, it wasn't described as an "iPod Killer"

1. Look at the name: Viliv. Now, think about Intel's new ViiV trademark. I forecast a lawsuit.

2. The technical specs are (almost) IRRELEVANT! Marketing is everything:

a. Promotion - has anyone heard of it? Apple spends zillion$ on promoting iPods. And, in addition, they get tons of free press coverage.

b. Price - how much when compared with an iPod? Needs to be less because it lacks brand cachet.

c. Physical Distribution - where can you buy one of these? Apple's iPods are ubiquitous. Without excellent retail channels, this thing is dead in the water.

d. Product - how are the specs? Sounds good. OK, a few points.

3. Snooze.

Form factor screams PSP - PSP would be the perfect device IF it had a 30gig hard drive & a faster way to get information onto it (standard USB = to slloooowwww!) Then you truly have a cool device for movies, games, internet, music - not excellent at any one thing but good at all. It wouldn't replace my iPod but it would have it's own place in my little world.

it says "unlimited excitment" below the screen, nice to see they know what kind of videos people will be watching on this.

The fatal flaw in video players is how do you get video on to them. iPod/iTunes is the only solution in which you can usually get a video on the player in less time then it takes to watch the video. All the other solutions have multi-step processes where you'd likely end up watching the video at home instead of taking it with you - thus rendering the device moot.

The iPod can't play decent quality video. Hook it up to a tv, it looks like you're watching grandma's tv. The quality is just horrible.

Is that a click wheel? Or something that looks like a click wheel? Is it close enough for a lawsuit?

If that is a 4 inch screen, then it is definitely longer than an iPod, which gives it the extra space to have a larger battery. How thick is it and how much does it weigh?

Not even remotely true.

I, too, wonder, if this wheel isn't just a rip off and will have some legal issues. I hope that Apple has patented the scroll/touch/click wheel?!

Dude its what like 320x240 resolution? We've known that from day 1. Obviously 320x240 sized video won't look good on a TV. Very insightful!

dude...the clickwheel was invented by a third party company and as far as i know they liscense it to apple for the ipod...so they probably are liscensing it from that company...unless of course apple has contracted strictly with them...but i could just be a complete idiot

320 x 240 is VHS quality, it's not HD, but it's far from horrible.

I thought the iPod's click-wheel was a rip off of the click wheel that's been used on Bang & Olufsen's (B&O) telephones for years. I figured Apple had licensed the technology from B&O and that was why the B&O MP3 player was the only 3rd party MP3 player that was compatible with iTunes. Am I right?

For what it's worth, a quick search in Google reveals that as of the introduction of the Nano in September 2005 the click wheel is "patent pending", according to Apple's press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/sep/07ipodnano.html

Let's all sit at our computers and rip our dvd collections to a low quality format, going through the whole process we did with our iTunes songs. We're here to waste time!

THE VILIV OWNS THE iPOD.

So it took some cues from the iPod and the PSP. Two people-loved devices. doesn't that seem like the logical thing to do??? And besides::: this things has a bulit-in FM reciever/transmitter, more than double the battery life of iPod, 4 inch screen, 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL AUDIO OUT... VIDEO OUT... did i mention a FLASH INTERFACE. So pretty much anything you want you can put on this thing with flash. trying to hack with homebrew will not be necessary. just make the flash.

i know some of you are a little immature to comprehend some of these things, but maybe you will look beyong the iPod bias and actually look at the device. Get over the looks. Get over the "Unlimited Excitement." Concentrate on the product.

Gosh, if anything has a circular control panel you say it rips off ipod. If it has a screen size and form factor similar to the ipod you say its ripped off ipod. dang.

Get some sense. Viliv owns.

first off boy you had better not have just said that. ANYONE would know that Apple does not own the patent for the scroll wheel, Microsoft does. AND Apple is too strung up on proprietary money making that they dont stop to think about the customers. Viliv p1 offers a UNIVERSE of things with flash compatibility - customizable interface, flash games/movies etc. - and the Viliv supports MORE THAN ONE FORMAT OF VIDEO

"Patent Pending" simply means that they have not yet acquired a patent on the item. It is and never was apple's creation - so they will NOT get a patent for the scroll wheel -

ipod has nothing on viliv

Microsoft does NOT own the patent for the scroll wheel with regards to a music player. The dispute between Apple and Microsoft was around the playlist, not the wheel.

They do, however, own the patent for a scroll wheel with regards to a mouse.
