Learn to Appreciate Apple Packaging 101

Apple's knack for brilliant design extends beyond its products to its packaging. For those that don't appreciate the labor of love that created the cardboard wrapper protecting the iPod that's soon to be yours, this, um, educational video should make the point clear.

Apple packaging... With a Microsoft touch.

The video is titled microsoft ipod packaging parody and can be viewed at YouTube. It takes Apple's original iPod packaging through a Microsoft-ified redesign, giving you a very clear view of each company's different approach to product packaging.

Unfortunately there are people in my office who don't get it. Many of them were agreeing with the add ons as they were happening! You just never really know the people you share space with.

Great parody and spot on. MicroSoft is not alone in cramming too much stuff onto available packaging or advertising space, it is pandemic.

Have you noticed how all of the Apple packaging has shrunk to the bare minimum - not only the iPod boxes, but the iLife, iWork and Jam Pack boxes are little bigger than the discs they contain. No big box with a single disc rattling about.

I wonder how MS would deal with a software box that size - couldn't you just imagine the packaging for iLife? The box would need to be as big as the one that housed my G5 desktop.

People walk into a store knowing that they want an iPod, it has already been sold and all that remains is the actual transaction. There is no need for busy packaging. I have always admired Apple's packaging from when I first bought my Apple IIc, there is as much innovation in their packaging as there is in the product.

I really sat up at the part right after they colorized the happy guy with the red background. Right when they added the Windows logo to that image I went from enjoying the video to LOVING it.

That graphic looks exactly like pretty much every hard drive I've ever bought. The guy who made this animation is a genius.

Anybody know what that song is (not the 2001 thing at the beginning)? It's been stuck in my head for days...
