Apple Intros 'High-End' Leather iPod Cases [UPDATED]

During Apple's Tuesday media event, CEO Steve Jobs introduced new leather iPod cases that he described as "high-end" accessories for the popular MP3 player. One version fits 5G 30GB and 60GB iPods while the other fits the iPod nano. Both will ship in mid-March for US$99.

Oh, wow.

I am so underwhelmed.

I guess these guys http://www.coach.com/aspx/search.aspx?query=ipod&index=1&x=0&y=0 did not offer "high enough" products.

An iPod Boom Box, an Intel Mini, and leather iPod cases. Yawn...

Bud lite. Where do I store my ear buds when not wearing them, these case designers should take into consideration. A little pocket on the side or something.

I need to have a hands on with one of these, $99.00 is a more than twice what I would want to pay for a case.

That's pretty lame. A $99 case? The only thing I see about "high-end" is the price.

Apple, I don't want you to waste your time with iPod accessories. Just make computers and iPods.

What a waste...

May've been more prudent to have left these out of today's announcements, and just stick them on the AppleStore with a press release.

$99 for a simple leather case? It looks like Apple is getting greedy. Considering the price of a new iPod, a case should be included.

umm... They do come with a case. A small white one that really is just for protection within a pocket, but it 'is' a case.

Oh yeah, that cheap little 99 cent sleeve. Actually it's more of a CYA item so they can say "hey it's not our fault you've got scratches on your iPod, we gave you a case".

$350 Ipod boombox, no friggin way. I've balked at paying $299 for the Bose Sounddock, and I think that looks much more elegant. I have the Bose Companion speakers, (best sounding "PC Speakers" I've ever heard) and I've heard the sounddock at a friends house and it sounded great. I can't imagine this "iFi" system sounding that much better. As for the leather cases, those have to be the worst cases I've seen for an Ipod. I must have tried 4 or 5 different cases for my 5g 60GB, and the main point was to protect and still provide access to controls. I ended up getting a Knomo case from England (http://www.knomobags.com...I got the Bourbon case). I ordered mine from http://shop.ipodworld.co.uk for Ј17.99. It worked out to be $49 American with shipping and leaves the video screen completely visible when the flip is flipped back (kind of a convertible case). I make my own screen protectors from discounted Writeright PDA protectors. They look better than most of the protectors designed for the Ipod IMHO and I hate the cases with built in plastic covers. It's like looking at a TV through a dirty window with dust an vaseline smeared on it. My only gripe with the Knomo case is it's another of the "fits 30 and 60 GB models, which means it's a bit too snug for the 60 (not as bad as DLO's Podfolio case...at least the round hole leaves the scroll area completely accessible). It's slightly off center horizontally (leaving a bit more space at the bottom of the opening) but it seems to be loosening up a bit with use. And as for the Mac Mini, I'm disappointed about the lack of a TV Tuner card though I really didn't expect one and not real pleased with the integrated video. The probably think that if they have built-in PVR capability, people will quit overpaying for the low res TV shows they are selling on Itunes (Law and Order, Season 1 is $35.99 on Itunes $38.26 at Overstock.com with $1.40 shipping...less than $4 more for the same episodes with much better quality. And if you want to watch it on the ipod, there are methods of doing it). That being said, I will probably be picking up a new Mini after the initial reviews come in. I'm using a 1.25 mini with a 1GB ram (upgraded myself...man I'm not looking forward to doing that again) for normal surfing and I've really been nothing but happy. Thought about trying the Frontrow hacks I've heard of, but that Dual Core is calling my name. How good would an add-on TV Tuner card be for the Mini?
