Wozniak Disputes iPod Spin-Off Suggestion; Reporter Responds

Last week, iPod Observer linked to a Globe and Mail article in which Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said: "Spinning off a separate [iPod] division makes a whole lot of sense." Last weekend, however, Mr. Wozniak said "I heartily deny saying this," prompting reporter Peter Nowak on Friday to print part of the transcript of his interview with the legendary programmer.

"The reporter asked some such question and I laughed it off as ludicrous," Mr. Wozniak wrote in a listserv post. "Why would Apple spin off something so successful? Well, organizationally, it must be so already and I acknowledged the question I was asked in that way ... I did NOT say that the iPod division should be spun off and I feel used in that regard."

In the transcript, Mr. Nowak asks "What about iPods?" and Mr. Wozniak replies with comments about how he's "blown away" by the "entire iPod auxiliary world." When Mr. Nowak queries if Apple should "be putting more emphasis on that aspect of the business," Mr. Wozniak brings up the issue of diversification, ending his statement with the comment that "maybe it should be a separate division."

Mr. Nowak then asks "Do you think so?" and Mr. Wozniak responds: "We're a computer company, we really think computers. Of course every product nowadays has a computer inside every technical product, so it's not too hard. I think spinning off a separate division for iPods makes an awful lot of sense." They then discuss how Apple would go about that, with Mr. Wozniak referring to his time with Hewlett-Packard in the 1970s.

Mr. Nowak also provided the recording of the interview in MP3 format so that readers can hear the relevant parts of it. "I recommend listening to the audio to hear the full context, flow and nuance of the conversation," he wrote.

Boring. Not news.

Falls into the who cares category.

Woz is a great guy and all, but we don't ask Gil Amelio what he thinks about Apple anymore either. (if anybody does, please GET A LIFE)

Peter Nowak should know that there's a world of difference between a division and a company. Steve wozniak was just musing and used the phrase "spin off" incorrectly - he should have said "...create a spearate division..." But...

Apple's done that anyway!

Peter should check his facts before getting bent out of shape!

Guest #1: Bravo, was going to say that myself.

Guest #2: Read Guest #1’s post.

Guest #3: I’m sure you thought you made a point in there someplace, but those of us who know that Coke Cola Corp. and Pepsi Corp. were always separate companies are having trouble finding it. Coke Cola was around long before Pepsi, and Pepsi was not a Coke Cola spin-off.

Woz got bent all out of shape because a bunch of so called reporters took the original Novak article and used his comments out of context to make it seem like Woz does not support the direction Apple is going in. Clearly, that is not the case. Woz still gets a check from Apple, so he is not going to bash the company.

Most of the problem stems from the fact that a spin off and a new division seem to be being used interchanagably. Woz eems to support a new division (which as one guest pointed out Apple already has), but not a spin off, which would means Apple would not directly control the production of iPods anymore. The spin off could happen, however, if Apple Records wins its lawsuit.

Also Woz's comments have been interpreted to suggest he thinks Intel is evil. However, Novak asked Woz if other people would think Apple's switch to Intel is akin to working with the enemy. Woz accordingly answered the question from the perspective of other people not himself.

Woz has clearly lost his fracking mind! What posesses him to do an interview with Nowak in the first place?

Well, he was in Auckland. Peter Nowak is the technology editor of the New Zealand Herald, the Auckland newspaper. Nowak interviewed him. That's how it works.
